Editor’s Choice – November 2025

Atherosclerosis proudly presents four outstanding papers selected as this month’s Editor’s Choice, showcasing innovative advances in lipid research and cardiovascular disease.

Leading this selection is John Chapman and Chris Packard et al., with the inaugural Expert State-of-the-Art Review“Triglyceride-rich lipoproteins, remnants, and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease: What we know and what we need to know.” This new article type delivers an authoritative synthesis of current evidence, identifies key knowledge gaps, and outlines priorities for future research in the field of TRL/remnant lipoproteins and residual risk.

We also highlight three outstanding original studies:

Atherogenic responsibility of lipoprotein (a) and other apolipoprotein B-containing lipoproteins in acute coronary syndrome

Antonio Meseguer-Hernandez et al. “Atherogenic responsibility of lipoprotein (a) and other apolipoprotein B-containing lipoproteins in acute coronary syndrome”. This study provides new insights into the relative atherogenic impact of Lp(a) versus other apoB-containing lipoproteins in acute coronary syndrome patients. Importantly, a predominance of Lp(a)-driven atherogenicity is linked to more severe, multivessel coronary artery disease.

Clinical impact of systemic inflammation across different high-sensitivity C-reactive protein cutoffs in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention

Angelo Oliva et al. “Clinical impact of systemic inflammation across different high-sensitivity C-reactive protein cutoffs in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention”This large retrospective study evaluates the prognostic value of different hsCRP cutoffs for predicting major adverse cardiovascular events in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention.

Associations between ideal cardiovascular health metrics and lipoprotein subclasses and atherogenic indices: A cross-sectional study of middle-to older-aged adults

Duong T. Luong et al. “Associations between ideal cardiovascular health metrics and lipoprotein subclasses and atherogenic indices: A cross-sectional study of middle-to older-aged adults”. This cross-sectional study investigates the relationships between the AHA’s ideal cardiovascular health (CVH) score and advanced lipoprotein subclass profiles in a cohort of middle- and older-aged adults.

Together, these publications exemplify the scientific excellence and translational impact that define Atherosclerosis.

It explores the relationship between ultraprocessed foods and cardiovascular disease (CVD), addresses common misconceptions, and presents evidence-based insights. The session also examines the Nordic dietary pattern – highlighting whole, minimally processed foods – and how it can help reduce CVD risk and support overall cardiovascular health.

Together, these discussions offer a comprehensive understanding of the role diet plays in cardiovascular wellbeing.
