The European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS) has a membership of National Societies with mutual interests and a common goal to facilitate education through joint initiatives, research and knowledge exchange. During the 2023 annual meeting of EAS National Societies, the absence and need for a registry across Africa was tabled. This led to joint efforts between the EAS and the Egyptian Association of Vascular Biology and Atherosclerosis (EAVA), with further support from the Hellenic Atherosclerosis Society (HAS) to plan a joint project entitled EAS Lipid Registry of Africa (EAS-LIPRA).
EAS-LIPRA has brought together investigators from multiple African countries with support from various regions of the Western world with an interest in dyslipidemia, preventive cardiology and patient care. This registry is envisaged to expand its reach across Africa and broadly facilitate multiple lines of scientific inquiry in lipidology and preventive cardiology.
EAS-LIPRA’s first study is on premature acute coronary syndrome (ACS) (clinicaltrials.gov NCT06238375). This registry is actively recruiting men and women aged 18-55 and 18-65 years, respectively, diagnosed with premature ACS at the time of enrolment in a multisite study across the African continent where data lacks and cases of premature ACS seems to be on the rise. There are 11 African countries participating at present as we expand the growing network to other countries yet to participate. Future publications of study results that will be generated from analysis of the data being collected are expected to inform healthcare practices and guidelines across Africa related to premature ACS and its risk factors and management.
This EAS-adopted project is testament to putting the goals of its National Societies into practice – to work together for joint accomplishments.
