What is new in the EAS LCN Consensus Statement on harmonisation of lipid clinics
Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) remains the leading cause of death worldwide, responsible for one in three deaths globally. Despite major advances in lipid testing, preventive therapies, and international treatment guidelines, implementation of optimal lipid management remains highly uneven across countries and healthcare systems. Many patients with familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH), elevated lipoprotein(a), severe hypertriglyceridaemia, statin intolerance, and other complex lipid disorders still lack access to specialized care, early diagnosis, and evidence-based treatment.
Why is this paper important?
This consensus paper from the EAS Lipid Clinic Network provides practical recommendations on how lipid clinics can be organised, strengthened, and harmonised across different healthcare settings. It offers guidance on key elements such as education and training, staffing structures, patient pathways, national registries, and healthcare policy. The overall aim is to improve prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and other lipid-related disorders, while also supporting more efficient use of healthcare resources.
Within the LCN nationally tailored webinar format, these recommendations can be translated into locally relevant discussions that support implementation in daily clinical practice.
Why now?
The need for coordinated lipid care is increasing rapidly. New diagnostic tools and therapies are continuously emerging, while cardiovascular disease remains a major global health burden. At the same time, the 2024 EAS Lipid Clinic Network survey highlighted significant variation in access to lipid clinics, expertise, and implementation of treatment both between and within countries.
This consensus paper therefore comes at a critical time, providing a framework to support more equitable, effective, and evidence-based lipid care across diverse healthcare systems and regions.
