Rare dyslipidaemias series

EAS Office · May 27, 2025

While the prevalence of each individual rare lipid disorder is low, collectively they are important and the busy specialized practitioner will encounter patients with these conditions. Lipidologists need to be familiar with their diagnosis and treatment as they may be associated with high morbidity and mortality.

This series of webinars is aimed at advancing knowledge on genetic dyslipidaemias, with a focus on rare forms, such as homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia (HoFH) and hypolipoproteinaemias.

Over six webinars, EAS experts talk us through an overview of the rare lipid disorders a healthcare professional might come across, challenges in diagnosis and management of patients, genetic testing, therapy and treatment options.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the characteristic phenotypic, biochemical, and clinical features suggestive of rare lipid disorders, including severe hypercholesterolaemic, hypotriglyceridaemic, and hypolipoproteinaemic presentations.
  • Differentiate common dyslipidaemias from uncommon inherited lipid disorders requiring specialised investigation and management.
  • Integrate a structured clinical approach to the referral, diagnosis, and long-term management of patients with rare lipid disorders in order to reduce disease burden and improve patient outcomes.
  • Identify the major diagnostic challenges associated with HoFH, including phenotypic variability, overlap with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia, and delayed presentation in clinical practice.
  • Evaluate current evidence-based therapeutic options for HoFH, including intensive conventional lipid-lowering therapy, lipoprotein apheresis, and newer disease-specific pharmacological treatments.
  • Apply practical treatment strategies for achieving substantial LDL-C reduction in HoFH patients through combination therapy and long-term specialist management.
  • Integrate an early recognition and multidisciplinary care approach to improve prognosis and reduce premature cardiovascular complications in patients with HoFH.

This series is primarily suited to physicians in internal medicine, cardiology, diabetology, endocrinology and in general practice. Outside this group, this educational programme is highly relevant to nurses working in lipid clinics, in cardiovascular prevention, in diabetes and in many other clinics taking care of patients with cardiovascular or metabolic diseases.

The module is especially suitable for:

  • clinical lipidologists
  • physicians specialising in cardiology
  • specialists in internal medicine
  • endocrinologists/metabolic medicine specialists
  • healthcare professionals working in preventive cardiovascular medicine
  • clinicians in genetic or inherited metabolic disease services
  • specialist nurses and allied healthcare professionals participating in lipid clinics or multidisciplinary inherited disease management.

EAS Lipid Clinic Network have independently organised all matters related to this activity. The Society gratefully acknowledges financial support from Amryt (Chiesi).
