2016 Anitschkow Prize has been awarded to Professor Peter Carmeliet

EAS is pleased to announce that Professor Peter Carmeliet, Belgium will be the recipient of this year’s Anitschkow Prize. This prestigious Prize, awarded annually by EAS, recognizes outstanding research in the field of atherosclerosis and linked metabolic disturbances.
Professor Carmeliet receives the Prize in recognition of the originality and novelty of his work and the promise for future high impact work to follow. The impact of his work is evident in many medical fields, not the least within cardiovascular disease.


The impact of his work is evident, not only in cardiovascular disease, but also in the cancer field.
Professor Carmeliet is an internationally recognised leader in field of angiogenesis and endothelial cell metabolism and publishes regularly in first rank journals on the central theme of his work. The disease focus is cancer, vascular disease and dementia, with publications covering both basic/molecular science and clinical/ translational aspects. He focuses on unravelling the molecular basis of angiogenesis and translating these genetic insights in therapeutic concepts and, if possible, novel treatments.


Peter Carmeliet is a physician and professor at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Leuven, Belgium). He is also Adjunct Director of the VIB Department of Transgene Technology and Gene Therapy, KU Leuven. Dr. Carmeliet is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Blaise Pascal Medal in Medicine and Life Sciences by the European Academy of Sciences (2011), the Münster Heart Center Award (2015), and award of the Noble title of Baron, granted by King Filip of Belgium (2015).

EAS is pleased to announce that Professor Peter Carmeliet, Leuven, Belgium, will be the recipient of the prestigious Anitschkow Prize 2016. Professor Carmeliet will present this year’s Anitschkow Lecture “Endothelial cell metabolism: a novel player in atherosclerosis? Basic principles and therapeutic opportunities” as part of the Opening Ceremony at EAS Congress Innsbruck, May 29, 2016.
