Hypertriglyceridemia and Atherosclerosis: Beyond LDL-C

Featured Open Lecture: January-February 2026

At the 2025 European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS) Congress in Glasgow, Professor Michael D. Shapiro, Fred M. Parrish Professor of Cardiology and Molecular Medicine at Wake Forest University, gave an insightful lecture entitled “Hypertriglyceridemia and Atherosclerosis: Beyond LDL-C.” In his talk, he highlighted the growing recognition that triglyceride-rich lipoproteins and their remnants play a significant role in residual cardiovascular risk, even when LDL-C is optimally controlled. He discussed emerging mechanistic evidence, limitations of current therapies, and future therapeutic targets aimed at reducing atherosclerotic burden beyond LDL-C lowering.
