Featured Open Lecture: March-April 2026

At the 2025 European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS) Congress in Glasgow, Professor Naveed Sattar, Professor of Cardiometabolic Medicine at Glasgow Cardiovascular Research Centre, University of Glasgow, gave an insightful lecture entitled “Attacking Scylla or Charybdis: Cholesterol or weight reduction for reduction of atherosclerotic CVD?” In his talk, he highlighted the growing recognition that even when hyperlipidemia and other classical risk factors for ASCVD are optimally controlled, obesity-related cardiometabolic diseases will increase the burden of disease in society unless obesity is controlled. He discussed emerging evidence from clinical trials aimed at weight-loss in relation to cardiometabolic disease and changing risk-profiles for ASCVD in a historical context with consequences for clinical presentation.
