Acute Coronary Syndromes in the absence of standard modifiable risk factors (SMURFs): Is sex the missing link?

May 5, 2025 | Plenary 01

Featured Open Lecture: November-December 2025

In this lecture, Prof. Gemma Figtree discusses acute coronary syndromes and the absence of standard modifiable risk factors (SMuRFs). It is known that around 25% of heart attack patients have no traditional risk factors; therefore, early detection of plaque would be a game changer. Women without SMuRFs have the worst outcomes after myocardial infarction. Thus, gaining a deeper understanding of the factors driving susceptibility and resilience is the next major step in preventing disease.
