Marcello Maresca is a Senior Director currently leading the Genome Engineering department at Astrazeneca.
He obtained his PhD in Molecular Biology form Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics in Dresden, where he worked on the development of the most used genome engineering tool in bacteria, recombineering. He did his postdoctoral work at the Novartis Institute of BioMedical Research (Cambridge, MA, USA) where he worked on the development and applications of genome editing tools in drug discovery.

The Genome Engineering department, that he currently leads, is establishing Genome Editing as novel therapeutics modality for AstraZeneca.
